A German philosopher, by the name of Gottfried-Willhelm-Leibnitz,(1646-1716) espoused the teaching or doctrine that, The existing world is the best possible.This led to the belief that one could expect nothing but good to come out of Life and the circumstances surrounding them. This idea was opposed by those who became known as,Pessimist. They taught that The Existing World is the Worst Possible. Therefore one could expect nothing but the worst out of life and lifes circumstances. Leibnitz broadened his thinking which had its foundation in philosophy that came out of the deep thinkers of the Greek and Roman era, and which is the basis for much of the thinking embodied in the teaching of our day.


As western thought developed it had its foundation rooted in beliefs of the people as they migrated from eastern regions, centered in the Mesopatamian regions, of what we now know as Iraq and Iran, also known as Babylon. This region has come to be thought of, (based on discovery of the last couple of hundred years) as the cradle of the human race. Much evidence has been uncovered to substantiate the premise, that it was into the region of this Mesopotamain valley that Noah and his descendants migrated to and from in the post flood era. The thought and beliefs of these early people developed according to the Gods that had been created by the heads of the households or tribes of the people and how much power or influence they developed and wielded over other families and tribes around. The power or influence each Head or Patriarch of the family wielded, was accredited directly to their God. And so, much of the myth and legends that came down in to the Greek thinking world was rooted in Mythology.


The Biblical account of a Man by the name of Abraham, from one of these tribes or families of idol worshipers, (Myriads of gods) from this region, with a different consciousness, (A Belief, A Faith), in a One and only living God, whose intention and purpose for the world of man was to bless them, and to prosper them, not only materially, but Spiritually, because the God, Who had appeared to him and had spoken to him was a Spirit being, ever present, all powerful, knowing all things. He learned from experience and observation as this unseen Being dealt with him, in providing his very lifes needs, and that it was He, Who was God, Sovereign over all. Just as He continually year after year brought renewal to the world of nature. Each season everything had its appointed time of Renewal. For everything in its time went down to death, and then out of death there sprang forth New Life. Read the account in Genesis, Chapters 12--22. Hear the Apostle Paul, (The God appointed Apostle to the Gentile), as he expounds his own enlightenment on the lesson Abraham was Taught by his God, and the lesson he learned as his God took him through lifes experience. Paul, also learned that out of death comes life. Romans, 4:16-25, Now for this reason it is by faith, that it might be in accordance with grace, in order that the promise might be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, A father of many nations have I made you) in the sight of Him whom he believed, even God, Who gives Life to the dead and calls the things which do not exist, as existing. In hope, against hope he believed, in order that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, So shall your descendants be. And without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarahs womb; yet with respect to the promise of God, (the promises of God to Abraham consisted of the gift of His, Gods Spirit to give life to his mortal body, Gal. 3:13-14,) he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what He had promised He was able to perform. Therefore also it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now not for his sake only was it written, that it was reckoned to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be reckoned, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. Him who was delivered up because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.


As Abraham went forth in his migration out of this area of the world into the new land that was his new God appointed homeland, and the homeland of his descendants for generations to come. Where ever he went he related the account of his blessings at the hand of his God. This caused much concern in the minds of all the people he came in contact with. Here was a head of a Tribe or Family, who claimed that he knew a God, who was more powerful than all of their gods, and that meant that all of their gods would have to give way to this people and their God, where ever He might lead them. All of their belief structure, which was based on myths, superstition, wishful thinking, was in jeopardy, and this gave rise to the realization that their gods could not and did not always work in their behalf for good, but sometimes they worked against them. This led to an expression of the other side of their nature, which came into the world of thought as, Pessimism. That not only was their good in the world, but also the opposite, which was Bad. And to the Pessimist, there always appeared to be more Bad than Good.


As the thinking of man developed through the different eras, the age of philosophical discussion developed. Some became so convinced of their particular school of thought, through-out these transitional thought periods, that many died at the hands of their fellow men just as it continues to do until today.


Thus we can readily see that just by virtue of ones thought pattern in the realm of simple logic, everything in the world is not as the Pessimist sees it, as wholly bad; nor is it as the optimist sees it as wholly good. It is often times quite startling to realize that in the Judeo, Christian thought pattern as recorded in the Documents handed down to us, in the Volume called the Bible, the Word, OPTIMIST OR OPTIMISM, doesnt appear. The idea or concept of OPTIMISM, came into our vocabulary out of this intellectual thought process, developed throughout the periods of mans endeavor, knowingly of un-knowingly, to establish himself as the authority, for all reason, in the affairs of mankind. His affairs personally, as well as for the greater masses.


This optimistic persuasion so captivated the wishful thought process of mankind, (for doesnt everyone want the best out of life). And if the world around them is the best possible, then, if man will only put out his best efforts, wont Good ultimately Win-out? As the Judeo-Christian persuasion influenced mans thinking more and more, (and it was their affirmation based on the promises of their God to Abraham, the father of all who walk by Faith,) that their God meant nothing but good for them, and even if one didnt believe as the Christian did, were they not a part of Gods creation as well? And if He was a merciful and compassionate God, how is that they could not have the best of this world as well? This thought pattern is so strong in our day, that very little difference if any can be distinguished between the thinking and profession of the professing believers and those of any other persuasion. And because of this when something bad takes place in their lives, the cry goes up, WHY!? WHY!? WHY should this happen to me? And so even though one is prone to look on the bright side, we are always faced with the bad in the world around us, and thus their is the tendency to vacillate, between Optimism and Pessimism. And so the first rule of inquiry comes into effect. If your premise is wrong, then your conclusion is wrong. If ones belief isnt founded on a solid foundation, one that is unshakeable, unmovable, eternal, such as the Word of the Only One and True God, and His purpose for mankind, then your belief system is in danger of being washed away at any given moment.


The Biblical Concept of Optimism, is expressed to us as HOPE. This concept is never based on mans reason, but rather is an awakening in the inner spiritual consciousness of man, always predicated on the exercise of Faith in the absolute certainty, That God IS, and that He is a rewarder of the one who has Faith in His Word concerning His Son and His Resurrection from the Dead. Heb. 11:6. This HOPE, or Christian Optimism, is Spirit of God engendered, (produced), and maintained, in the innermost being of the True Believer, as He or She, by faith maintains the belief of abiding in Him, and He in them. John 17: 15-26. His Promises are sure and secure, all confirmed in the resurrection.


Let us consider the Record of the Apostles, that our development in the Renewal of the spirit of our minds, might be brought about, and there-by pass from a state of, WISHFUL THINKING, or a mind set of, HOPE-SO, thinking into an assured Hope, of Thus Saith the Lord, and what God who cannot lie, has said in all of His Promises, is sure and secure to us, thus resulting in and exuberant, positive, Christian Optimism, or HOPE.


Before we, you dear reader and I who am writing this, in order to avoid any appearance of impropriety, or in the case that the thought of Plagiarism, might creep in, I first give credit for everything Ive learned in the last Fifty Years, since becoming a believer in, The Good News from God, Concerning His Son Jesus The Christ, (Gods Messiah), Rom. 1:1-7,) to Gods Holy Spirit, my constant companion and Teacher,(nurturer), and to the Lord Jesus Himself for making Himself real to me in every area of life, in which Ive learned to defer to Him for Spiritual Wisdom and Knowledge. Then too, I give credit to those men who have used their God given talents and abilities in the area of language translation and exposition of the Greek and Hebrew language as it had been brought down to us into the English. There are many scholars and students that I have perused over the years, but one in particular, that I will look to in this writing. What I will write in the main, is a gleaning from his efforts, and his depth of insight gained also from a God given knowledge of the language and passed on to we who apply ourselves to gaining greater understanding with meaning, into the Gift of Life we the believer receives upon exercising faith in Him. The man by name is,Kenneth S. Wuest, Scholar and professor of Greek Studies, at the Moody Bible Institute, of Chicago. Let me Quote from the first paragraph of the preface of many of his books. This quote, is from his word studies in the book of Romans. This book is written for the Bible student who is not conversant with Greek, but who would like to work beneath the surface of and English translation in the untranslatable richness and added accuracy which the original text afford. I will so designate when I make a direct quote, and state at this time, in no way is this writing being compiled for the purpose of receiving monitory gain, but only to the end that the inquiring heart and mind of some, might gain satisfaction in the enrichment of their relationship with the Lord and Savior, sent into the world, to give life to the world. This One is the Living Lord of Life, The Lord Jesus Christ. My gratitude to Kenneth S. Wuest, and all else who have been such a great help to me in coming to this point in life. To the Lord be the Glory.


Let us now proceed to the writings of the Apostle Peter, as he extols the Greatness of God; The Blessedness of God for causing this, Christian Hope, Christian Optimism, to be born in the innermost being of every believer, and its present in everyone of us to recognize, enjoy, glory in and Praise our Lord for. It only remains to recognize the difference between the positive assurance of expectancy now born with in after becoming a True Believer, and that human spirit of wishful thinking, that prevailed in us prior to becoming believers. The later having been based on nothing substantial, while the former, that of the believer, has now a foundation which is unshakable, and its Gods presence with-in which makes it so.


When we Bless God, we only give the fruit of our lips, by confessing everything He has said to be so. Hebrews, 13: 15. When God blesses us, the Believer, He bestows upon the believer, all the Gifts and Wealth, which are Spiritual, and originate with Him in that Spiritual realm where he resides, and they are brought to us in the Person of His Son Jesus Christ, and distributed by His Holy Spirit in the realm or sphere of Eternal Life. With this in mind let us consider Peters writing, 1Peter,1:3-5. (but of course in order to get the full importance of his understanding, one must read the entire document). But for an insight into the Hope, (Optimism), that pervades his soul, well concentrate on these three verses.


The reason for Peter Eulogizing, Extolling the Virtues of God; The reason for lifting up Gods name in praise, is because the great loving heart of God, compelled,( propelled ) Him to show Mercy on this fallen race of humanity, and there-by cause all who will believe His word for it to be , Born again to a living hope (Christian Optimism), all of which is predicated upon, has it foundation in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Born again; this terminology has become to some, very life itself, and to others, it is a real affront to their human reason.


When considered in the light of the meaning as we are told, there is the meaning of two words, or two thoughts, when we use the word, Again. The same comes to light in the discourse as recorded by the Apostle John, when Jesus uses the term Again, As in You must be Born Again. What we are given to understand is the import of two actions taking place. An original, originating from a source, as in God Breathing the Life of Deity, His creative Life into Adam, and Adam became a living soul. But as a consequence of Adam choosing a wrong source of sustaining this Life, had this life taken away in death. Consequently, if man is to live eternally, or regain this Life relationship with his Creator, there is of necessity, the need of Being Born Again. The second, one being brought about by the same source as the first, This Peter affirms, was caused to happen Again by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the Dead. Peter alludes to this as God the Creator, causing all believers, to being, Born Again, (Same Source), but what results is the creation of a, Living, a Lively Hope, coming into being in the innermost being of every true believer. Its a, Lively Hope, because its living. This Hope is Alive, therefore its Lively. All of which is founded upon the Living Reality, That Because He Lives, WE Also live in Him. The purpose of God in all of this was that He might bequeath His Eternal Life, (This Eternal Hope, This Christ produced Optimism), to all believers. That all believers might obtain an inheritance, (Eternal Life), which is imperishable, will not deteriorate, is undefiled, and will not fade away, or be taken away, as was the case with Adam, the first


Let me quote from Kenneth S.Wuest, as he has said it as well as it can be said, One result of being born from above is that the believer has a lively hope. The word lively is from the Greek word which speaks of the life principle. It is the word used when the inspired writer speaks of eternal life. The word lively in the Greek text is not and adjective but a participle. A participle is a verbal adjective, having the action of a verb and the descriptive powers of an adjective. The word Hope is described by an action. The word Lively is an excellent translation. The margin gives living. But it is more than a hope that is alive. It is actively alive. This hope is an energizing principle, a spontaneous, overflowing, buoyant thing. It is hopefulness, a spirit of optimism, a looking ever upon the bight side of things, a looking forward to only that which is good, an expectancy of continued blessing and joy. It is the opposite of that fear of the future which grips so many hearts. This Christian Optimism, this exuberant hopefulness, leaves no room for worry. This lively hope should be the normal atmosphere of every Christian heart.


How may we have it? By yielding to the One whose ministry it is to produce this hopefulness in our hearts, the Holy Spirit. This Christian Optimism is a heaven-born thing,(Life), something supernatural. The secret of enjoying it is in the fullness of the Holy Spirit. The secret of the fullness of the Holy Spirit is in a moment by moment trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for the same (John 7:37-38 ).And so Peter says, Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who impelled by His great mercy, begot us from above, so that we have a spontaneous, buoyant, exultant spirit of hopefulness, this begetting having been accomplished through the intermediate instrumentality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from among those who are dead.


It is out of this new found Hope that Peter then goes on to encourage the True Believer to go forth with an anticipatory outlook on life, even though at times we find ourselves encumbered with all the trappings of life, (impediments), that sometimes seem to weigh so heavy upon us. He acquaints this approach to daily life, to gathering up all the loose baggage we are so prone to carry around, and to not let anything be flapping in the wind, (So to speak).so that, These Things dont get hooked, (snared) by the obstacles along lifes pathway,( that we encounter daily), that would otherwise hinder us, hold us back, from this life of exuberance, and rejoicing. (The analogy that Peter uses is centered in the loose flowing clothing of that day of course, but the spiritual application for us today is to not bring all of the old adornment from the old life over into the new, therefore it is said in other places,put off the old that you might put on the new.)


Returning to a previous portion of Pauls writing, and continuing, with his thought, that of, using Abraham as the father of all who walk by faith, and where the Christian Concept of , Hope or Optimism, began to be so vividly held forth for all who came in contact with his descendants were to be made aware of. (Romans 5:1-6), Having established, that the believers faith in the new era, or Christian era, is just a continuance of, a completion, a fulfillment of Abrahams faith, Pauls affirmation is that this Exuberant, Hopefulness, is his as well, and is for all who will receive by faith what God is offering to the race of mankind.


Therefore,(he writes), having been justified by faith, (past tense--and accomplished fact) we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (His being offered up, (in death), for our transgressions, and His resurrection for our justification). we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ,the foundation of the Christian Optimism) He has become the believers Propitiatory, (the believers meeting place), the place where there is now therefore no condemnation, for those who are in Christ Jesus, and so the believer is at peace, with God, for the first time in the history of mankind. And its at this juncture in the new found experience of life, that Christian Optimism is born. Because, he says, that it is through the Lord Jesus Christ that we gain access, or obtained our introduction into the realm of the Grace of God. A Realm from which man in his natural state has been excluded, since man was put out of Gods presence, (when Adam was excluded from the Garden and Gods presence.) The True Believer now stands Firm on a solid foundation, in this realm of Grace, and this results in our exultation, our exuberant optimistic hope of the glory of God. Verse 3-And not only this, but we also exult, (are optimistically hopeful), in (in the midst of), our tribulations; knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance, (An Optimistic outlook in the midst of lifes most trying circumstances). and perseverance, proven character, and proven character hope. (Christian Optimism). verse 5, and Hope does not disappoint; the Love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. verse 6, For while we,(The race of mankind , all the descendants of Adam), were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.


Everything that has been said by all three Apostles, as we have quoted, is in complete accord, one with another, and is the fulfillment of the Promises of Jesus as we alluded to in Johns Gospel, 17:15-26. Paul continues his discourse in the Roman letter for the next couple of chapters, and sums up his declaration of the accomplishment of Gods good news, that it truly is the Power of God, resulting in salvation, to everyone who believes. In the Eighth chapter, verse 1,- he declares, There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, ( a real reason for Christian Optimism), For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, GOD DID: sending His own Son in the likeness of the flesh of sin, and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.


The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world and accomplished Redemption, Reconciliation, Justification, Sanctification, re-establishing Fellowship,(a living relationship), between God and man. A relationship, that once entered into will last for eternity. John affirmed this, 1John 1:1-3. Peter as we have seen reaffirmed this as well, and Paul is just as emphatic in his affirmation, and goes to great length in his newly appointed office of Chief Steward of the manifold blessings of God. In fact they all recognize the chaotic conditions of the world around them, but agree with the Prophet Isaiah, 45:18-19, that God had created this universe and the world within it to be a Cosmos, (an ordered, well maintained ) System in which man was meant to live, at peace with himself and with his fellowman and with God, his Creator and sustainer in life. So as we follow Paul's thought through Chapter Eight of Romans, he reassures us that we need not be pessimistic, when we recognize the chaotic conditions of the world around us, but to approach it with Christian Optimism, for God has done everything necessary to make it so. Hear him as he encourages all who would believe, Rom. 8: 9-11, However you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit , if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies, through His Spirit who indwells you.


This is in complete accord with the instruction of Jesus the Christ just before He was to leave this earth and return to take up His position and office as the redeemeds Great High Priest. John 16: 33- These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. Jesus had prepared His disciples for what lay ahead and Paul prepares the believer of the Church Age, to recognize the conditions of the world and its systems of chaotic, upheavals, turmoil, and confusion that has resulted in the judgment of this lawlessness against the predetermined purpose and manner of life, He, God, had prescribed for the race of Adam.


So having gone to great length to expound in an orderly manner, the orderly method by which God had brought about the completion of His Great Good News, Paul now in Romans 8: 12-17, gives all who would believe, to understand, that our obligation is not to pacify the natural man or the world systems with its demands. But if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. Ver. 15-17, The Believer is not to be a defeated, pessimistic, person any longer. The Believer is to be optimistic, for they are now born of a living hope. The relationship is now one of a living relationship, as between father and son, and so the one born of this hope responds by so addressing God, as his Heavenly Father.


Paul now makes a comparison between the life and the conditions of it here in this age and the one in the age to come, and he declares that the one is not worthy to be compared to the other. Ver. 18-22. This he declares, even in the face of all that he was having to endure, just because he was faithful to the charge he had received as a steward of the Gospel. Read his account of the treatment he received as he writes in 2 Cor. 3: 17--7:1.


Probably the most expressive affirmation of Christian Optimism that is expressed by this Giant of the Hope of the believer, is given to us in luminous splendor, akin to the Glorious light he saw on the road to Damascus when Jesus confronted him there. We have all at one time or another used the the analogy when making a point of comparison, Its no more than a drop in a bucket. I believe what he has just described is that its more like a drop in the Ocean, in comparison. He doesnt diminish the chaotic turmoil of the world around us, nor does he try to gloss it over, he calls it as it is, and acknowledges in accordance with the Eternal Word of God, that bad as it is, its not to deter or discourage us, but take heart, because its all in accordance with the laws that govern this universe, which is, every thing of the first creation must go down to death and the grave, that the New Birth, or the act of Being Born again might take place. This applys not only to we the descendants of the race of Adam, but for the physical universe as well. Here he likens it to the groaning, and travail of a birth of any kind.


Verse 23, And not only this, but we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, (Having been born again, the natural one first, and the spiritual second ), even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons,the redemption of the body. The body also will go through a renewal, ICor.15: 45-58, But specifically verse 51-54.Behold I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable,and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will be brought about the saying that is written, DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY. Here is the full and complete illumination of the believers Hope, (Christian Optimism) Just as Peter declared, the foundation stone or chief corner stone of the spontaneous, buoyant, overflowing, optimistic hope of the true believer is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. So as we return to Romans 8: Ver. 24-27, For in Hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? (Hope-Optimism always anticipates something better is ahead). But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. (Christian Optimism). And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.


Well pause here a moment, because verse 28, is probably one of the most misused, misquoted verses by Christians professing to know and understand the message of life. What we hear most often is, All things work together for good. That is the farthest from the truth, for Jesus had warned the Disciples, saying, Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. We are confronted with enough evil everyday, and if we allowed it to, it would pull even the best of us down with it, if we were not constantly on our guard against it.


What the verse really says is, based on all that God has done and supplied for us and in the light of the help that He is constantly giving to the believer, is that with this foundation of knowledge, Verse 28, And we know that God causes all things to work together for those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Notice that it is God who is causing, (the all things) to work together for good, and it is to those who love Him. This should take our thoughts back to the fifth Chapter, where we are taught that God, Who first loved us caused this love, which is of Himself, to be shed abroad in the heart of the believer, that the commandment given to Gods people might be fulfilled in the believer, Jew or Gentile. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart mind soul and body. In verse 29, Paul sums up all that has been said in that all of Gods effort in behalf of the race of mankind is according to His Eternal purpose, which is to conform all who would believe Him for it, to the image of Jesus Christ. With this thought permeating his whole being, he exclaimed,If God is for us, who is against us ? And in verse 32, is the crowning glory, He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?


In the remainder of the chapter, ver. 33-36, he enumerates all the negativism that man is prone to encounter in his daily walk, but concludes with one of the greatest expressions of Christian Optimism one will ever find anywhere. Verse 37-39, But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.


To the True Believer who will experiment, (put into practice) by faith the Truth of the Word of God), they will realize, (experience),the truth, even though the ones nearest and dearest to you turn against you, or though you are maligned and ridiculed, and rejected, because of your Hope, (Optimistic) out-look on life, and even though tragedy may strike at the heart of your very life here in this world, you may hurt as a consequence of the happenings, but your new found hope in Christ, always sustains you . Though you witness professing believers all around you in the midst of despair, and the acts of retaliation, or questioning whether or not God had abandoned, forsaken them,YOU will know an inner peace, an inner strength, that will sustain you without the need of counterfeit remedies. But the Believers Hope, the Believers Optimism, that tells you yesterday was tragic, Today is good, but tomorrow is going to be even better, because it is in the Lords hands. Its like the song writer penned, I dont know what tomorrow holds, But I know who holds tomorrow.


May the Lord be Eulogized, and may His richest blessings, which originate with Him in that Spiritual Realm where He resides, and which have been poured out abundantly upon this world in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, be yours in abundance, By faith. Ephesians 1: 3-4.
